Seniors urged to beware of advisory center scam

A scam mailing that claims to be from the Senior Advisory Center has been targeting seniors in the area, according to a state representative.

Mike Sturla (D-Lancaster) said his office was alerted to the scam last week when several constituents called in to question the mailing. He said the document asks seniors to fill out a tax rebate form with personal information and return it with a processing fee.

"There is no legitimacy to the letters coming from the Senior Advisory Center," Sturla said. "The state's Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program has not been changed, and no one should ever pay a fee for submitting their paperwork."

Sturla added that this scam isn't the first one of its kind. Last year, Pennsylvania seniors received a letter with a California postmark that also purported to be from the Senior Advisory Center, he said. It asked seniors to submit paperwork along with $39 to a Harrisburg address that had no connection to a senior center.

"People have to be vigilant regarding letters and e-mails they receive asking them for money. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is," Sturla said.
