1 killed in crash on I-81 south near Harrisburg

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) - State police said their preliminary investigation into a deadly five-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 indicates a dump truck driver was not paying attention.

The investigation is ongoing, but it appears 52-year-old Garry Alters of Rebersburg was attempting to exit I-81 south at Cameron Street and for unknown reasons failed to see that traffic had either slowed or stopped in front of him, police said in a news release.

Alters struck the back of a passenger car and then abruptly changed lanes, causing the truck and its 24-ton load of road salt to overturn and crush a Volvo underneath of it, police said.

The driver of the Volvo, 44-year-old David Vogen of Shickshinny, died at the scene, according to investigators. His passenger, 46-year-old Todd Kocher of Benton, escaped without injury.

Three others involved in the crash were taken to hospitals for treatment of minor to moderate injuries. Their names were not immediately released.

The crash shortly before 10 a.m. caused a three-mile backlog before traffic was detoured onto the 83 split.

The highway reopened shortly before 4 p.m., but PennDOT said drivers could expect delays in Harrisburg area on I-81 South, I-83, Route 581, Route 22 and Route 22/322 for the next few hours as traffic congestion clears.
