SPRINGETTSBURY, Pa. (WHTM) - Springettsbury Township Manager Benjamin Marchant never thought he would have to make decisions about gambling eight months ago.
"This legislation with the Category 4 casinos did take the commonwealth by surprise as it was voted on and passed in just November of 2017, and they gave everyone less than two months to decide whether to prohibit it in their township or not," Marchant said.
The township initially rejected the idea, but after two anchor stores in York Galleria closed, the board of supervisors decided a mini-casino could be a possible solution for the shopping center.
On Thursday, township supervisors agreed on a preliminary plan to rezone part of the York Galleria to allow a mini-casino.
The plans have to be reviewed by the York County Planning Commission, which will provide feedback. After that, the township is free to vote on adopting the plan.
