Motorists who use the Pennsylvania Turnpike may want to give themselves some extra time when driving near the Susquehanna River Bridge. Police are slowing and may sometimes stop traffic on the new bridge to allow the safe demolition of the old one.
Workers set off a single explosion this morning to begin blasting work on the old bridge deck near the West Shore. Vehicle traffic on the new bridge was slowed to about 25 miles per hour for about 15 minutes during the blast. Airplanes were kept away from the area and trains near the blasting site were stopped on their tracks at a safe distance.
Prior to this morning's blast, demolition work on the bridge consisted of removing sections of the deck piece by piece with heavy equipment.

Preparations for the blast operations included the construction of a temporary causeway; built to prevent any of the bridge remains from falling into the river and to allow the removal of the debris by truck.
Blasting operations will continue on the West Shore side of the bridge through September 7. Traffic stoppages will be conducted again Thursday at 10:00 a.m.
Demolition of the East Shore side of the bridge will take place in November and December.
