Police said a newly-installed video surveillance system backed up a man's report that he was the victim of a road rage incident.
Carlisle police said they used one of five cameras in the Memorial Park area to determine that 36-year-old Steve Mackie was driving extremely close to the victim's vehicle as the two approached a railroad crossing on Pitt Street Tuesday evening, just hours after the video system went into full operation.
The victim reported that he had argued with Mackie and left to avoid further confrontation, but was followed and tailgated by Mackie, police said.
Mackie was cited for following to closely, and while the offense was minor, police said the incident illustrates how valuable the cameras will be.
"The cameras are going to be good for two reasons," said Carlisle police Chief Stephen Margeson. "First of all, they will on occasion capture a violation or a crime that can give us the proof necessary to file charges, and hopefully, going forward they will actually serve as a deterrent."
Carlisle will eventually have ten additional surveillance cameras in the downtown area. Those cameras are still being installed.
Police did not release the video of the incident Tuesday because it is considered as evidence.
