Local family to get extreme makeover, volunteers needed

A local family is about to get the home of their dreams from ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Producers are remaining tight-lipped about the project, and will only say that a family somewhere in central Pennsylvania will get the big news on June 19 when host Ty Pennington knocks on their door. Construction begins June 20.

Dillsburg builder Jeff Musser, who spearheaded several renovations as part of abc27's Midstate Home Makeover projects, has been tapped by the Extreme Makeover team. He called it a once in a lifetime opportunity.

"It's really a great opportunity for the community to come together and help a family in need and our company, Musser Home Builders, has been asked to take the lead, so we're very excited about that," Musser said.

Musser Home Builders will have until June 26 to totally transform the home of the winning family, leaving them with just one week to tackle a job that would normally take five months.

Musser said he can't do it alone. Thousands of volunteers will be needed to make it happen.

"All the materials, all the labor is donated," he said. "We need skilled labor trades people and professionals. We also need volunteers, and volunteers can be serving coffee, picking up trash - there's all kinds of things for volunteers to do."

Musser expects a lot of hard work and very little sleep, and hopes the project will change thousands of lives.

"My passion is that we will be able to change people's hearts," he said. "Our theme for this is 'hands build homes, hearts change lives' and I really want this to touch people more than just sticks and bricks."

A pep rally for all interested community members and all designated volunteers will be held Monday, June 13 at the West Shore Evangelical Free Church, at 1345 Williams Grove Road in Mechanicsburg, from 6-8 p.m. Food and live music will be provided.
