Police find marijuana growth in field following high-speed chase
A man who led police on a vehicle chase through York Tuesday morning also led them to find fresh marijuana plants growing in a Winterstown field, authorities said.
Police said they spotted the man driving southbound on Route 24 in the area of Country Club Road in Windsor Township around 8 a.m. They began to follow him after he was seen speeding through a work zone.
The man failed to stop, however, and continued up the crest of a hill near List Road where he hit a passing northbound Suzuki, police said. The driver of the Suzuki - William Dennis, 50, of Brogue, PA - was wearing his seatbelt and was taken to York Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The suspect then drove off into a cornfield where police deployed a helicopter to find him, authorities said. That's when 11 freshly-planted marijuana plants were discovered growing in the field near Apple Road.
A background check revealed that the suspect may be wanted in South Carolina for a school weapons violation and two local warrants, police said.
The name of the suspect has not yet been released, but police said he is 23-years-old and from Stewartstown, Pa. He was treated medically for crash-related injuries and will be sent to York County Detention Facility for unrelated warrants.
