For Shippensburg University student Kyle Mahorney, returning to Codorus State Park in York County was no easy task.
"I cannot believe it happened, now that I am here and seeing it all again," Mahorney said. "I thought I would never come back."
The calls for help are still fresh in his mind. They were calls he answered without hesitation.
Mahorney was hiking with friends when he heard yelling from Lake Marburg. Mahorney dove in and swam as fast as he could to save a man and woman who were struggling in the water.
"(I) got in the water, swam out to there...by the time I got to her in the water she yelled, ‘he just let go of my foot," Mahorney said.
"I just started diving and started looking for him…going every which way," Mahorney continued. "I couldn't see him. I had to get air, went back down, couldn't find him."
Mahorney said he did everything he could to save Brian Krumrine, Jr. of Hanover, but unfortunately his efforts were not successful. The student-athlete said he is struggling with the outcome of his rescue effort.
"I couldn't believe I just barely missed," he said. "Thirty seconds quicker. If we would have just been there 30 seconds quicker."
Officials said Mahorney did everything he could. On Sunday, Krumrine's brother even contacted him via Facebook, calling his lifesaving efforts "heroic."
"I got on Facebook, and his younger brother contacted me, and said 'what you did…you tried to save my brother, thank you so much, it was a heroic effort," Mahorney said.
