Volunteers needed at Hershey’s Ronald McDonald House

Posted: Updated:
HERSHEY, Pa. (WHTM) -

Patrick Gallagher runs, plays and laughs like any normal six-year-old.

"He's actually doing a good day today, especially because today was a treatment day," Patrick's mother, Roxanne Gallagher, said.

Patrick isn't always energetic. The Scranton-area youngster suffers from a rare medical condition that causes fluid to back up in his kidneys. He has dealt with it since birth. Last November, he underwent surgery and received a new kidney.

"You can't tell them everything is going to be fine because you don't know what's going to happen next," Roxanne Gallagher said.

Patrick is now undergoing outpatient treatment to make sure his body accepts the organ. After treatment Friday, he wasted no time showing us his "home away from home."

The Gallagher's stay at the Hershey Ronald McDonald House when they are in town. Strapped with medical bills, they say every little bit helps.

"Just knowing you have some place to stay and people that are willing to help you, that's the best," Roxanne Gallagher said.

Ronald McDonald House offers services free of charge, but there isn't enough of the volunteers they rely on, and now the organization is putting out its own cry for help.

"We are in need. We are in desperate of volunteers," volunteer Shirley Newhart said.

They need a lot more volunteers on evening and weekend shifts to do things like answer phones and assist guests.
