York County program against student truancy expands

Posted: Updated:

A York County program meant to keep kids in school is expanding this school year.

The mentoring service called "Check & Connect" helps students and their families stay focused on education through continued support and counseling.

It will expand to accept 7th and 8th grade students at Hannah Penn Middle School, in addition to the students it already accepts from Southwestern School District, (grades 7, 8 and 9), Northeastern School District, (grades 7, 8 and 9) and at Smith Middle School (grades 7 and 8).

A total of 183 students have participated so far. Students with patterns of unexcused absences are referred to the program by school administrators or district magistrates.
