The Franklin County Coroner's office and dozens of rescue personnel took 11 hours to recover a body discovered Thursday morning in a Chambersburg stream.
The body was found just after 9:30 a.m. at the entrance to a culvert near 330 W. Commerce Street.
Coroner Jeffery Conner said removal of the remains took hours because of safety issues. He said ground around the 30-inch culvert collapsed in front of the body while investigators were taking photographs.
In addition, debris around the body had to be carefully removed while investigators looked for any possible evidence.
Crews worked throughout the day to shore up the area around the culvert, which runs about 20 feet under the roadway. Conner estimated that the 60-70 people assisted in the excavation and recovery..
It was not immediately known whether the remains were those of a male or female. Conner said the remains had been there for "a long time."
