Oops, I missed it again!!! Every year I do the same thing! If not for my kids having the day off, I would never know that it was a holiday! Columbus Day, the next official holiday after Labor Day, creeps up ever so quickly and quietly and then BAM!!! This poor holiday is definitely not getting the pre-promotion it deserves or that I apparently need to remember it! I think we should start talking about it, hyping it up, DURING Labor Day Weekend! Some sort of warning that it's coming right after September! I mean, who is focused on Columbus Day when it has so much to compete with...Halloween, then Thanksgiving, Christmas of course? Who decided it should be when it is!? What are we celebrating anyway? Christopher Columbus discovering America? Well, weren't there already people here? Of course! So, didn't THEY discover it before he did?? And why do only the banks, schools and post offices get off that day? What about the rest of us?? I'm not sure what people even do with their day off! What do they do? What are we supposed to do on Columbus Day? Is there some sort of ritual? Besides shop the sales?? Is it a retail holiday or a great-man-in-history holiday? What would Columbus think of the way we celebrate? The things that boggle my mind.....
