3 Harrisburg Council members shrug off Corbett's declaration

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Harrisburg City council members on Monday night pretty much shrugged off the governor's declaration of a fiscal emergency in Harrisburg.

None of the three council members on hand for Monday night's Budget and Finance Committee meeting were surprised by the governor's declaration, nor were they prepared to change course.

"It was expected. Nothing has really changed," councilwoman Susan Brown Wilson said. "They need to realize that the individuals who helped get us here need to come to the table with more than what they're offering."

Councilwoman Wanda Williams said the bond holders and the county commissioners still have not made any effort to sit down with Council and discuss a solution. What about meeting with Mayor Linda Thompson to come up with a possible solution by the 30-day deadline?

"I have no problem with getting together with the mayor to try to adopt some type of plan," said Williams. "But if she doesn't have a revised plan, there's no need for us to get together."

And then there is the bankruptcy filing by City Council. Councilman Brad Koplinski had been hoping the governor would hold off on his emergency declaration.

"We asked him to wait on this until the bankruptcy proceedings," said Koplinski. "Let's have the bankruptcy proceedings go through to see if it's a legal one. We believe it is. We believe it was filed properly."
