Police: Man assaulted 8-year-old trick-or-treater

A 24-year-old Adams County man has been arrested for attacking an eight-year-old girl as she was trick-or-treating Monday night with her mother and brother.

Shawn Funt, of Arendtsville, grabbed the girl by her arm and costume and dragged her to a nearby yard, where he threw her to the grounds and began choking her, according to court documents.

The girl had been walking just a few yards behind her mother when she was grabbed, the documents state.

She told police that Funt told her to be quiet, but she screamed anyway.  Her mother heard the screams and was able to get her away from Funt, investigators said.

Funt ran but was later arrested by state troopers. He was taken to Adams County Prison on charges of reckless endangerment, simple assault, harassment, and public drunkenness. Court records show he has a criminal record that includes burglary and DUI charges.

State police said such incidents are why law enforcement officials recommend parents stay with their children while trick-or-treating. Trooper Michele Davis said children should always make noise in a similar situation.

"Kids know when something is wrong. They have a sense just like adults do," she said. "I always encourage parents of children to tell them 'If somebody tries to confront you, scream or run away.'"

Funt was sent to Adams County Prison on $50,000 bail. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Nov. 9.
