USDA report clears ZooAmerica in bison deaths

HERSHEY, Pa. (WHTM) -

Hersheypark's ZooAmerica has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the deaths of two bison during the September flooding brought by Tropical Storm Lee.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture found that zoo officials took the appropriate steps as the waters of the Swatara Creek flooded the animals' pen.

Hersheypark said in a statement that they had not yet received the USDA report, but added that "the summary of their findings certainly provides validation for the efforts put forth by the ZooAmerica team to secure the safety of the animals within their care during the extreme and historic flooding."

"The responsibility that our zoo personnel have and feel in that regard is absolute and the loss they experienced was felt deeply by each and every member of the team - and, truly, by our entire company," the statement continued.

The animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals had filed a formal complaint with the USDA.

PETA claimed that ZooAmerica staff did not take adequate preparations to ensure the safety of the bison before the flood, and ignored "repeated warnings" about weather conditions.
