HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -
When former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky went on the offensive, answering questions on NBC's "Rock Center," his actions raised several red flags with a woman considered an expert in spotting deception.
abc27 News spoke via Skype with the Chicago-based truth expert who identifies herself only as "Renee" - or the professional nickname "Eyes for Lies" - about Sandusky's answer when asked if he is sexually attracted to young boys.
"Am I sexually attracted to young boys? Sexually attracted? I enjoy young people. I love to be around them. But, no I'm not sexually attracted to young boys," was Sandusky's reply.
It took Sandusky 17 seconds to say "no."
"It's a common trait of someone who is deceptive," Renee said. What they do is, they need time to think because they're surprised by the answer. So, they repeat the question to give themselves time to think."
"He doesn't deny it, and when he finally does he stutters and struggled for words," she said. "We have more speech hesitations. So, these are red flags."
When asked if he is completely innocent, Sandusky admitted he "horsed around with kids."
"I have showered after workouts, I have hugged them and I have touched their leg without intent of sexual contact," he said during the interview Monday.
"He doesn't say 'Yes, I'm innocent.' He hesitates," Renee said. "We heard him give this long spiel of what he could say and he also admits to some inappropriate behavior. I've done some of these things.I mean, who would admit to something if you've done nothing. It was a huge red flag."
Renee said that overall, Sandusky's actions raised several red flags, including that he decided that he chose to do a phone interview instead of going on-camera.
"I can tell you I don't trust him," she said.
