Corbett again defends length of Sandusky investigation

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Gov. Tom Corbett was asked again Monday why Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was allowed to roam free for years while allegations of child sexual abuse were investigated.

His critics say Corbett as attorney general should have arrested Sandusky far sooner and moved ahead with the prosecution once there was one accuser.

Corbett, who was the featured speaker Monday before the Pennsylvania Press Club, countered that in such cases there is strength in numbers.

"If you were to lose that one case and then continue to investigate the other cases, it would've been much more difficult to bring charges because it would seem to you, the public, as vindictive because you lost the first case," the governor said. "You want to build the best possible case that you can."

Corbett also said he supports the Penn State board of trustees in their naming of former FBI director Louis Freeh as their lead investigator.

The board is looking into how university officials handled allegations of child sexual abuse against Sandusky and reviewing Penn State's policies for reporting sex crimes.
