Radio station WIOO damaged by fire

CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) -

Country music radio WIOO was knocked off the air Monday afternoon when fire spread through the first and second floors of the station near Carlisle.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames in about 10 minutes, but not before the radio station was damaged by heat and smoke.

It was not immediately known when the station would resume broadcasting.

Investigators said the fire apparently was caused by an electrical problem in the first floor ceiling.

John Bruetsch, Cumberland County's public information officer, said no employees were in the building when the fire started because of the New Year's Day holiday.

Bruetsch said an employee had stopped by the station at around noon to check on the automated programming.

He said the fire started after the employee had left the building.
