Update: Harrisburg changes location of temporary animal shelter

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Harrisburg City has re-located its temporary shelter for stray animals, just one day after announcing it would be on City Island.

According to city spokesman Robert Philbin, the shelter is now located at the Vehicle Maintenance Center (VMC) building off of Cameron Street, adjacent to the incinerator.

Philbin said they chose this facility because it has heat and a drainage system that will enable city staff to hose down floors.

The Harrisburg Police Bureau was originally trying to set up the shelter inside a stable on City Island, but officers quickly realized that wasn't going to work because the building was not properly equipped.

Philbin told abc27 negotiations for a permanent solution continued Tuesday afternoon with the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area, but as of 5:00pm, there was still no contract deal.
