Erratic I-81 driver caught on tape

Posted: Updated:

Dramatic video surfaced on YouTube Monday showing an erratic driver traveling through the median on Interstate 81 in Dauphin County. First responders said she was having a medical emergency at the time.

The cell phone video was shot by Shawn Lucas of York just before 8:00 Monday morning near the Paxtonia Exit at mile-marker 72.

Lucas told abc27 other drivers were out of the cars helping push her out of the median, when she took off again. He said he began filming because he believed she was trying to flee police, who were already on scene.

The video shows her 2009 Kia speeding through the snow-covered median, and at times, becoming airborne. At one point, Lucas expresses concern that she is getting close to oncoming traffic in the southbound lanes. Within a few seconds, her car came to a final stop after crashing into an embankment.

Chief Mike Fife with Paxtonia Fire Company told abc27 the 61-year-old woman suffered from a diabetic emergency.

"I would just say it like this -- the lights are on but nobody's home. Meaning, your eyes are open, you're wide awake, but you don't realize what's going on around you," Fife said. "And from the video that I watched, that has to be what's happening."

The woman was taken to Community General Hospital, where she remained Monday night.

Fife said the video should serve as a reminder for everyone to practice defensive driving -- and buckle up -- every time they get into their car.
