Well, we got our first SNOW!!! Yeh!!! And then we got rain...boo!! It's been a strange winter thusfar. Even more perplexing are the Republican debates! This is going to be some year ahead and one where you can't help but feel the energy of everything going on around us. How anyone can avoid participating and getting involved in the shaping of our future in some way, is beyond me. There are so many forums in which to voice our opinions and to make a difference and of course, voting this fall will be everyone's right and responsibility.
I got on a tangent there! Whew! What we can do locally, this weekend, to make a difference, is go out and support the arts and participate in fundraisers and expand our minds and hearts with activities that distract us from our everyday routines and obligations. Here are some suggestions. Go out and enjoy the weekend everyone!
January 27th
Hollywood Casino - I swore I would mention a respected colleague's performance Friday night from 9:00-1:00. Catch the Uptown Band on the main stage! They are awesome!!
Open Mic Night - If you're in Perry County, and you think you have some talent, stop by the Espresso Yourself Cafe in Newport and show 'em what you've got!! Starts at 7:00pm
Lebanon BlognaFest & Winter Carnival - This is Friday and Saturday at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center. Show up hungry!!!
Play Auditions - Friday thru Sunday, the Gamut Classic Theatre at Strawberry Square in downtown Harrisburg, is holding auditions for "Jungle Book" for kids age 5-18. Call 238-4111.
Pennsylvania Auto Show - at the Farm Show Complex. Takes place all weekend. There is a parking fee and entry for this event.
January 28th
Winterfest - This is going to be a band marathon, boasting 20 bands in all, starting at 7:00pm. Wow, so how late does this thing go??? If anyone attends, let me know! It will be held at the Appalachian Brewing Co. in Harrisburg. $10 at the door.
Make-A-Wish Zumbathon - I just love the idea of a fun dance class for a good cause! This one is being held in Hanover at the Magic Elm Skateland from 4:30-6:30pm. The fee is only $10 and all proceeds go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Call to register 717-818-9411.
January 30th
Cooking Class - Dawson Flinchbaugh, from Flinchy's restaurant in Camp Hill, is holding a cooking class at Giant in Camp Hill from 6:00-8:00pm. Register by the 27th at 717-724-1166. I keep telling Dawson to publish a cookbook!!! His recipes are the most delicious and unique anywhere around!! Check out the great menu at his restaurant and take one of his classes to learn some of his secrets so you can cook just like him!!!! Well, we can try anyway.
Don't forget to check your local townships, as many of them sponsor dance classes over the weekends. And don't forget to support your local art galleries and exhibits. Many of those are even FREE!
