Woman convicted of killing police officer to be released early

YORK, Pa. (WHTM) -

A York County woman, who was convicted of hitting and killing a police officer with her SUV will be getting out of jail earlier than expected.

Joanna Seibert, of Dillsburg, began serving her prison term last May. She was convicted in 2010 of homicide by vehicle and tampering with evidence in the 2008 death of Northern York County Regional police officer David Tome.

She struck Tome with her SUV on Route 15 in Franklin Township while he was reconstructing an earlier crash. Prosecutors said Seibert was speeding and distracted by her cell phone and makeup at the time of the crash.

Seibert was sentenced to one to five years behind bars for Tome's death, but abc27 has confirmed that she is scheduled to be released next month after serving just 10 months. The York County Prison warden said Seibert received five days credit for each month of good behavior.

Seibert's attorney said the early release is standard procedure.

"She's maintained exemplary behavior while she's in the facility and therefore, based on York County procedure, she's being treated just like everybody else and she will be released at an earlier date," attorney Ed Spreha said.

Seibert is scheduled to be released on March 6.
