CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) -

Cumberland County Commissioner Gary Eichelberger has announced he will not challenge Rep. Sheryl Delozier for the 88th state House District.

"In light of the impending budget crisis that our county government faces very soon, I believe I need to continue functioning as the chief voice for fiscal responsibility in the courthouse, and to lend my best efforts to end reckless spending, contribute my management experience and knowledge, and advocate for a return to the sound budget policies that previously made Cumberland County a model county in our Commonwealth," he said in a statement.

"My reasons for considering entering the House race unfortunately remain valid: the redistricting fiasco that has gained the rubber stamp approval of our local House members, especially in the 88th District where I reside, vividly demonstrated that Politics with a capital "P", rather than service to the public has become the main preoccupation of too many who have been granted the privilege of serving in elective office," he said.

"This problem unfortunately is a byproduct of the current state of affairs in central Pennsylvania politics where local party organizations, especially my own Republican party which is in the majority, have used their stranglehold over the machinery of elections to benefit themselves and their friends, usually at the expense of taxpayers, rather than to deliver good government to our citizens," he said.

"My hope is that dedicated and concerned citizens will demonstrate the courage to challenge this situation, as candidates, contributors and campaign workers, in the current and future House and Senate elections," he said.
