Jury picking begins in another Pa. corruption case

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Jury selection is under way in a state corruption case against a former top Democratic lawmaker in Harrisburg and his 1-time aide.

Former Rep. Mike Veon and Annamarie Perretta-Rosepink are facing trial on corruption charges related to allegations they misused public grant money for Veon's nonprofit organization in Beaver County.

Jury selection began Monday in a Dauphin County courtroom. Veon is already serving a prison sentence after being convicted on separate corruption charges in 2010.

The state attorney general's office alleges the pair illegally diverted millions of taxpayer dollars through the Beaver Initiative for Growth to hire consultants who did little or no work, rent office space that the nonprofit hardly used and perform political tasks.

The charges were originally filed in 2009.
