Midstate woman miffed by campaign letter gets help with hard times

Posted: Updated:

We have an update to a story we brought you on Friday about a midstate woman facing financial hardship.

Linda Lattuca was running out of hope and wrote to the president. She didn't like the response she got from him, but she is overwhelmed by the way you've responded. Her pantry is overflowing. So is her heart, after midstaters rallied to help.

"There are honestly truly good people out there," she said. "But I never expected to be on the receiving end of that because I've been told 'no.'"

Linda was frustrated at a system that says she makes too much money for help, but a $16,000 per year reality that says otherwise.

Huddled in her chilly house because she can't afford heating oil, Linda wrote a letter to President Obama. Ten days later, a request for a campaign contribution showed up.

"I was so mad when I wrote the letter to the president and then he sent me that back,"she said.

But help has now come. So has an explanation. A spokeswoman for Obama's Pennsylvania campaign calls it an unfortunate coincidence that the letters crossed in the mail. Many of you have told us you've also received Obama mailers.

"It followed too close on the heels of my letter to him," she said.

But Monday, Linda wasn't focused on what the government can't or won't do. She was too amazed at what people can and will.

"There's fresh meat... fresh chicken, fresh pork chops," she said. "It's incredible. I'm impressed."
