ROBESONIA, Pa. (WHTM) -

State police said a woman apparently bludgeoned her 11-year-old daughter to death before setting her Berks County home on fire and killing herself.

The apparent murder-suicide occurred Sunday at the home of 39-year-old Donna Evans and her daughter, Madison Evans, in the 2300 block of Brownsville Road in North Heidelberg Township, according to police.

Police said the mother was distraught over the breakup of a relationship. They said they found about a half-dozen letters in envelopes addressed to her former lover.

Investigators responded to the home at around 9:30 p.m. after a family friend and a neighbor saw smoke coming from the home. Firefighters found a lit grill inside the house.

Neighbors said they knew there was relationship trouble, but never thought it was escalate to such a level.

"I didn't sleep much last night," neighbor Carl Hobwood said. "I can't get the thought of that little girl ... she was a cute kid."

The investigation is ongoing. Autopsies were scheduled for Tuesday.
