CAMP HILL, Pa. (WHTM) -

The death of a Steelton woman on the Harvey Taylor Bridge Bypass near Camp Hill has been ruled a suicide, according to investigators.

abc27 News has learned 30-year-old Dawn Martin had been taken to Holy Spirit Hospital for a mental health evaluation Thursday night, but she walked away from the emergency room a short time later and took her own life by lying down on the roadway and rolling into oncoming traffic.

Martin was struck by two cars just west of Erford Road in East Pennsboro Township at around 11 p.m.

East Pennsboro Police Chief Todd Basehore said witnesses had stopped and tried to help her.

"Before the victim was actually struck, two vehicles had swerved to miss her and pulled off the roadway to come back and see if she was okay," Basehore said. "Before they got back to her, she was struck."

A family member told abc27 they are extremely distraught, and are still trying to determine why Martin was able to walk out of the hospital. A spokeswoman for Holy Spirit Hospital declined comment Wednesday.
