Man has new outlook after throat cut by chainsaw

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Kevin Murphy almost died on his birthday. He turned 49 on April 18, the day his neck was cut by a chainsaw.

Murphy has been an arborist for nearly 25 years. On his first day working for a new company in Cornwall, he was cutting brush along Route 322 with a chainsaw when he slipped and landed on it.

"I had the chainsaw in my hand," he said. "It revved up and I fell right onto the chainsaw."

Doctors told Murphy he came just centimeters away from hitting a major vein or artery and losing his life. The wound took more than 80 stitches. Murphy has a large scar, but that's about it.

"They said I didn't really damage anything, just cut open my throat," Murphy said.

Murphy was released from Penn State Hershey Medical Center the day of his accident and went back to work the next day. He said the incident has changed his life and he feels like he has a second chance, so now he wants to spend more time with his family.

"I honestly shouldn't be here," he said. "It definitely opened my eyes and my heart to what I should be doing."
