Parents defend 'The Dirty Cowboy'

ANNVILLE, Pa. (WHTM) -

Parents angered by the decision to pull a children's book from Cleona Elementary School took to the microphone during a Annville–Cleona school board meeting Thursday night.

Many parents are outraged by the decision to pull "The Dirty Cowboy" and have started petitions that now include several hundred signatures.

"There is nothing sexual about this book. It is not obscene by general standards and deals with a daily human occurrence: bathing," one parent said.

The story of a cowboy who takes a bath and can't get his clothing back from his dog comes with illustrations showing the naked man covered in all the right places.

The American Library Association and the National Coalition Against Censorship recently weighed in by sending letters to school officials. The groups would like to see the book back on the library shelf.

The board took no action Thursday night, indicating it is not considering a reversal of its decision last month.
