Lightning strike sets fire to borough office building

BIGLERVILLE, Pa. (WHTM) -

Cleanup is underway at the Biglerville borough office after the building was set on fire by a lightning strike during Tuesday's thunderstorm.

Biglerville Police Corporal Craig Hartley was the only person inside the building when the fire started.

"I started moving the cars out and then I went back inside and started pulling computers out," Hartley said.

The building known as the Musselman House is shared by the police department, Borough Council, and the Adams County Fruit Growers Association; all workers who doubled as clean-up crews Wednesday.

"Of course, we need to have a place where we can set up telephone, Internet and those sort of things, so we really had to make a decision and do it quickly," Council President Neil Eckert said.

While repairs are made, two officers and a borough worker will operate in a mobile command center on loan from Cumberland Township.

"Everybody is pitching in to get things cleaned up," said Scott Briggs, vice president of communications for Knouse Foods, the company that owns the building.

With extensive damage to the roof and attic, cleanup is expected to take several months, but like a sunny day after a severe storm, the focus is on the bright side.

"I'm really impressed by all those doing the work to get this done," Eckert said.
