BELLEFONTE, Pa. (WHTM) -

An adopted son of Jerry Sandusky has publicly disclosed that his father molested him, and that he was prepared to testify against the former Penn State assistant football coach at his child sexual abuse trial.

A statement released Thursday by Matt Sandusky's attorneys, Andrew Shubin and Justine Andronici, said, "During the trial, Matt Sandusky contacted us and requested our advice and assistance in arranging a meeting with prosecutors to disclose for the first time in this case that he is a victim of Jerry Sandusky's abuse."

"This has been an extremely painful experience for Matt and he has asked us to convey his request that the media respect his privacy," the statement said. "There will be no further comment at this time."

His attorneys said the 33-year-old Sandusky was ready to testify for the prosecution in his father's child sex abuse case that started June 11. However, the case was handed to the jury Thursday afternoon without Matt Sandusky's testimony.

Sources to ABC News said prosecutors couldn't call Matt Sandusky him to the witness stand for direct questioning because he was not included in the charges against his father, but they could have called him as a rebuttal witness if his father took the stand, the network reported.

Lawyers for Jerry Sandusky were considering allowing the ex-coach to testify up until the last day of testimony Wednesday, but eventually changed their minds.

Matt Sandusky is one of six children the coach and his wife, Dottie, adopted. He had publicly supported his father and insisted after the coach's arrest that he was never molested by him.

He even took his children to visit Sandusky after his Nov. 5 arrest, but the mother of Matt's children immediately obtained an order preventing Sandusky from being alone with the kids.

Matt's Sandusky's ex-wife has since publicly accused the former coach of inappropriately touching her five-year-old son, but in a statement released through her attorney in February, the former daughter-in-law said authorities told her there was not enough evidence to file criminal charges.

Matt's Sandusky's birth mother, in an exclusive interview with ABC News last year, said she had contacted authorities years ago about her son's safety. Debra Long said her son idolized but later feared Sandusky, who he met through The Second Mile charity when he was 10 years old. She said at age 15 he lashed out and burned down a barn with another youth and was placed into the Sandusky home as a foster child. Matt was adopted by the Sandusky's when he was 18 years old.

Matt's name also came up in testimony during Sandusky's trial, when the accuser known as Victim 4 told jurors the former coach started a "soap battle" in a locker room shower. He said Matt Sandusky looked nervous, turned off his shower, and went to another part of the building.
