CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) -
State police in Carlisle said they believe an accident that left nine people injured on Interstate 81 Monday afternoon was a hit-and-run.
The
accident happened shortly after noon in the area of mile marker 47 in South Middleton Township. Witnesses said a southbound minivan was hit by a tractor-trailer before it went out of control, crossed the median and northbound lanes, and crashed on the shoulder.
Six children and three adults including the driver, 42-year-old Marsha Charles-Lynch, were transported to hospitals for their injuries. Some of the children were more seriously hurt. One with
severe injuries was flown to Penn State Hershey Medical
Center.
Although it does not appear that the driver who caused
the accident stopped, somebody else did. Linda Biden saw what happened
and immediately got out of her car to help the family.
"I just comforted them, put stuff to stop their bleeding," she said.
Biden said the family told her they were on their way home to Georgia from
vacation. She said one of the children told her she was seven years old. Biden said others appeared to be younger.
Northbound lanes of the interstate were shut down between Exit 45 for College Street and Exit 48 for York Road for nearly an hour.
