Nike, Inc. has announced that it will remove Joe Paterno's name from the company's child care center because of the findings of a Penn State investigation into the handling of the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal.
"I have been deeply saddened by the news coming out of this investigation at Penn State," Nike president and CEO Mark Park said in a statement. "It is a terrible tragedy that children were unprotected from such abhorrent crimes."
Nike co-founder and chairman Phil Knight, who received a standing ovation when he defended Paterno at the coach's memorial service in January, also issued a statement.
"According to the investigation, it appears Joe made missteps that led to heartbreaking consequences," Knight said. "I missed that Joe missed it, and I am extremely saddened on this day. My love for Joe and his family remains."
