YORK, Pa. (WHTM) -
One of the robbers who shot a York Township jewelry store owner also shot one of his accomplices, police said Friday.
York Area Regional police said the suspect injured during the robbery of White Jewelers
was in a Bronx, New York hospital. He was being treated for a gunshot
wound to the stomach, but was not being cooperative with investigators.
Police
have identified him as 39-year-old Jamell Smallwood,
of Allentown. He has been charged with counts including attempted homicide, robbery,
theft, and receiving stolen property, according to online court records.
Smallwood was shot as he walked out of a back room of the shop during the hold-up, but investigators have not determined what led to the shooting.
A witness to the crime told authorities that two men went into the jewelry store at 204 St. Charles Way Thursday morning, and that one of them came out a short time later and told a third man, the driver of the getaway car, that he needed help, police said.
The driver got out of a light green Hyundai Elantra and went into the store and the witness then heard gunshots and saw the three leave the store and flee in the getaway car, police said.
Responding officers found the owner, John White, on the floor behind a jewelry case bleeding profusely. It appeared he had been shot in the left arm, chest, and stomach, police said. White was taken to a hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.
The Hyundai was later found in the parking lot of the Powder Mill Apartments on Dew Drop Road and was still running. A neighbor reported that he saw four men pull up in a black Chevrolet Impala and leave in the Elantra, and watched as they returned later and fled in the Chevy, police said.
A records check indicated the Impala was registered to a woman who lives in Allentown, police said. The information that Smallwood was in a Bronx hospital came from an FBI agent.
