STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WHTM) -

The halo over Joe Paterno on the Heister Street Mural was removed.

Artist Michael Pilato told abc27 he painted over it on Saturday morning.

He said he did it because Sue Paterno expressed concern that too many people were holding Joe Paterno at "saint" status.

After removing the halo, Pilato then added a blue ribbon symbolizing sexual abuse awareness.

He said he spoke with Paterno just a few weeks before he died, who said he wanted the ribbon there because he felt Penn State should offer more classes in how to address child abuse.

Pilato said Paterno's image will stay on the mural because the coach did many good things for the university, despite a bad decision not to report allegations against Sandusky.

He will decide whether the next few days what to do with Graham Spanier's image, which remains untouched.
