Michael Smeltz
MILLERSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -
The Dauphin County Coroner's office has ruled the death of a Millersburg man a homicide.
The ruling came after an autopsy Monday morning on 50-year-old Richard Blomgren.
Blomgren died Friday as the result of injuries he suffered in a June 29 assault at his home along Market Street, the coroner's office said.
Police said 43-year-old Michael Smeltz of Millersburg is accused in the killing. Smeltz was already in Dauphin County Prison on counts of attempted homicide and assault, but the charges were upgraded Monday to criminal homicide.
Blomgren suffered traumatic injuries to his head and neck and was taken to Penn State Hershey Medical Center, but authorities said Blomgren remained unresponsive and there wasn't much doctors could do.
"There was no hope of recovery, Chief Deputy Coroner Lisa Potteiger said. "His condition offered a poor prognosis and they removed life support."
State police said they believe Smeltz attacked Blomgren because he believed the victim was in a relationship with a woman he had previously been seeing.
