Residents respond as robbers strike Harrisburg's Midtown

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Police in Harrisburg are investigating a several violent robberies reported in Midtown last night.

Juan Ramos said he left Chicago's violent inner city for Harrisburg's safer streets, but now he's not so sure.

"I don't really feel safe around this neighborhood," Ramos said. "I first moved here to get away from all this stuff."

Three violent Midtown muggings overnight have people on edge. Just before 10 p.m., police said two black men with guns robbed six people within minutes. The robberies happened along Green Street. Two more strings of armed robberies have happened within the week.

"That's too hard for this area," city resident Steve Miller said. "Harrisburg is a beautiful city and those things shouldn't be happening."

Summer heat could be a reason, say police. However, Midtown robberies have been common, too common, for people living there.

"Stay in the house, stay away from all this trouble, that's basically the only thing to do," Ramos said.

No suspects have been identified or caught. Police believe the robberies in each of the sprees were committed by the same people respectively. It seems they're taking cash, cell phones and, in some cases, pistol-whipping or punching people.

Police urge people to walk in groups but, as we learned last night, even that doesn't always help.
