Nearly 200 seized dogs to be put up for adoption

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Nearly 200 dogs brought to the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg after they were taken from a Pennsylvania home have since been placed in animal shelters across the state, officials said Friday.

All 187 dogs, mostly Chihuahuas, will eventually be put up for adoption.

Dog wardens and state police removed the animals from the home of Albert and Thomas Ambrosia in Benton, Columbia County. Charges were not immediately filed, but an official called it "one of the worst cases of animal hoarding" in Pennsylvania.

Officials with the state Department of Agriculture said 197 dogs were living in unsanitary conditions and had skin, eye and dental health issues. Authorities said they also found the bodies of 30 more dead dogs in a freezer at the home.

The owners were allowed to keep 10 dogs. The rest were surrendered to rescue organizations and sent to a temporary emergency shelter at the Farm Show Complex, where they received medical attention and were housed overnight.

People wishing to adopt one or more of the dogs should contact a shelter that has taken in the animals. The dogs will be available for adoption from the following shelters:
