Crash survivor shares story to discourage distracted driving

Posted: Updated:
ENOLA, Pa. (WHTM) -

Amanda Kloehr almost died when she slammed her car into the back of a tractor-trailer in June 2008. The 24-year-old Enola woman says she was driving distracted.

"I do not remember the impact at all," Kloehr said. "I was distracted. I had my GPS and my cell phone."

The impact of the crash pushed the tractor-trailer forward six feet. Kloehr's face hit a forklift on the back of the trailer.

"I had completely crushed the right side of my face," she said. "The eye socket was crushed. The cheek, the jaw was fractured in four places."

Kloehr's mom rushed to the hospital. She says she did not recognize her daughter when she saw her for the first time.

"My knees buckled," Tina Wright said. "I wanted to feel her heartbeat to make sure she was still alive."

Kloehr's crash happened on her mother's birthday.

"I can't imagine anything harder then putting my birthday on her tombstone, " Wright cried. "Thank God she is alive."

Kloehr was in the hospital for more than a month. She talked about the first time she looked in the mirror after the crash. She waited until her family left the hospital for the day and hopped over to the mirror.

"I didn't recognize myself," she said. "It wasn't until a tear rolled down my cheek and that same tear rolled down the girl in the mirror's face that I realized it was me."

Kloehr now proudly shows her scar and talks to others about how she almost died. She spoke to students at Central Penn College in Summerdale, where she is also a student.

"She is such a strong person," said Kristina Dupont, a Central Penn College freshman. "I appreciate her coming to talk to us."

"A very emotional story. It touched me to be honest," freshman Gerald Jackson said.

Amanda says she will continue to share her story and hopes to travel to other schools.

"With every speech I give, if I can only save one person, that's enough and that's all that matters to me," she said.
