CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Humane officers say they have been dealing with a lot of animal seizures lately, which is overwhelming animal shelters - especially a recent case involving 17 dogs, mostly Chihuahua puppies, all in poor health.

Humane Officer Buck Hessler said he seized the dogs Thursday after several warnings to the owner about unsanitary conditions.

Hessler said the trailer the animals were living in was infested with cockroaches, feces, and urine.

"It was just overwhelming," he said. "I had to wear my mask and my boots and my gloves to go in to get the animals."

Hessler said the owners signed over the animals and will be cited for the unsanitary conditions.

The puppies are tiny and as cute as could be, but they and other animals from seizures are overwhelming the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter. The shelter is designed to house 35 dogs, but on Friday had 55.

Shelter spokeswoman Jennifer Vanderau said often these types of stories get a lot of attention, but it is important that families keep in mind other animals that have been at the shelter for a while when considering adoption.

"We've got dogs back there who have spent a long time in a kennel and really need a home and are equally deserving of love," she said.

Vanderau said people who do not have the option to adopt can help the seized dogs and other animals by donating food and other supplies, either in person or on the shelter's website, cvas-pets.org.
