CAMP HILL, Pa. (WHTM) -
Working smoke alarms helped to save a Cumberland County family from fire this morning, even though the homeowner thought it was a false alarm.
Crews got the call at around 6 a.m. to a fire in the 1900 block of Carlisle Road in Lower Allen Township.
They saw smoke coming from the attic, but investigators say the fire actually started on the first floor and slowly worked its way through the walls to the roof.
The homeowner first smelled smoke at 4:30 a.m., but reset the alarm and went back to sleep because there were no flames.
"The first one had very light smoke condition in the house. They weren't sure if it was the neighbors' cooking or the neighbors' campfire," said Frank Williamson, township police chief and director of public safety. "They couldn't trace back the load or origin of the smoke and rest that alarm. It was about an hour and they notified to the fire department and evacuated the house."
Two adults and a child escaped without injuries.
The cause of the fire was not immediately determined.
