MARIETTA, Pa. (WHTM) -
Crews searching for a missing teen who was last seen swimming in the Susquehanna River in East Donegal Township, Lancaster County put their efforts on hold around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, but said the search would resume Friday.
Police said the search had turned into a recovery effort instead of a rescue. One boat was using sonar to help find the teen and a state police helicopter also aided in the search.
Late Thursday evening, divers took to the water but found nothing.
Officials said 18-year-old Jason Howard went missing sometime around 7 p.m. Wednesday. They said he and two other teenagers entered the river and attempted to cross the Susquehanna.
They said the friends, 19-year-old Michael Young and a 17-year-old, got out with the help of fire crews. Police said the teenagers were caught in a current.
Howard's family told abc27 News he graduated from Donegal High School this spring, turned 18 in June, and planned to enter the military.
Howard's mother said her son was a strong swimmer and that he told her he successfully swam across the river in the past.
