CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) -
The well water at North Dickinson Elementary School in Carlisle has tested positive for E.coli.
The contamination was found during routine testing and Carlisle School District notified the Department of Environmental Protection immediately.
Superintendent John Friend told abc27 News the school is under a boil water advisory and all water fountains have been shut off. Friend said they will place water coolers throughout the school to provide more than 200 students with drinking water when they return August 27.
A Department of Environmental Protection spokeswoman said the district is working on upgrading its water system, but will not be able to complete the process before school begins.
"The main problem the school is facing right now is the amount of chlorine that needs to be in their water," DEP spokeswoman Lisa Kasianowitz said. "Their system, as of right now, cannot handle high amounts of chlorine, and chlorine needs to be present in water to basically bleach out bacteria."
The district has until October 25 to fix the problem.
