Midstate polling expert weighs in on Romney's VP pick

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Romney's announcement comes just three months before the election. Will his bold choice pay off? And what will it mean for Romney's chances here in Pennsylvania?

Founder of Susquehanna Polling and Research Jim Lee says it's a little too soon to tell. It could either play for or against Romney.

"He's (Ryan) quick on his feet. He's a likeable guy. Romney has, I think, upped the ante for the election and it shows that Romney's not afraid to take chances," Lee said. "I think the Obama folks clearly feel like this was a gift to some respects because he's a guy that has a record in Congress that can easily be criticized."

Pennsylvania voters are casting their preliminary vote on the Romney-Ryan ticket.

"I was going to support Romney, although Cain was my first choice," said Ken Baker of Lykens. "Cain supporting Ryan solidifies my vote in November."

Before Romney's official announcement, Baker hadn't heard of Ryan.

But Mark Spear of Pittsburgh has heard of Ryan.

"We lived in Wisconsin for 13 of the last 16 years and I'm not at all impressed," said Spear. "His rhetoric is so far radically right I don't think it's good for the country."

Will that difference of opinion divide the Republican party? Lee said probably not.

"Our polling has show republicans and conservatives in particular are already revved up to go for this election to vote against the president."

Lee said we won't know the impact until the newest poll comes out later this month. But that will only give us the first glimpse of how Romney's choice will affect voters. We won't know for sure until November.
