Lightning strikes damage Wegmans, steel plant

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

A lightning strike damaged the clock tower at the Wegmans food store on the Carlisle Pike in Cumberland County late Tuesday night.

Smoke could be seen coming from the clock tower around 11:20 p.m. after a round of violent storms crossed over the area. Fire crews opened up part of the tower to get to the flames.

A Wegmans representative said there was no smoke in the store, but the building was evacuated while firefighters disassembled part of the tower.

The company said a fire barrier prevented the flames from spreading to the rest of the roof.

The store reopened at around 2 a.m. and was open for business Wednesday. A tarp has been placed over the tower, but the clock is operational.

Lightning also caused a small fire at a steel plant along Front Street in Steelton, Dauphin County. It happened shortly before midnight.  No one was inside.

The storms also brought torrential rain to the area.  Many roads were closed temporarily due to flash flooding.
