Broad Street Market to remain closed for now

Posted: Updated:
HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Harrisburg's Broad Street Market did not get a clean bill of health from city inspectors on Wednesday and will remain closed indefinitely.

City spokesman Robert Philbin said four health inspectors discovered unsanitary conditions despite vendors' efforts to clean up over the past few days.

Philbin said there is no timetable for reopening.

"If a significant percentage of the vendors are not up to code -- utensils aren't clean, there's grease on the floor that attracts cockroaches -- if a significant number of vendors are not in compliance...even if some are, it's just not a safe environment to serve food in," Philbin said.

City officials forced the market to close last week after inspectors discovered cockroaches and rodents inside the market. Both buildings were fumigated over the weekend.

Another inspection is scheduled for Thursday. If the market passes, it could possibly reopen Friday or Saturday.
