Harrisburg's Broad Street Market reopens

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Harrisburg's Broad Street Market has reopened after a nearly two-week closure stemming from the discovery of roaches and rodents.

Roasted chicken and fresh baked bread wafted through the historic market Wednesday morning. Leon Glick broke out mouthwatering pulled pork, brisket, and potatoes. The Two Brothers BBQ vendor was happy to be back in business.

"It feels great to be back open," Glick said. "We got the news last night about 6:00 and it was just like 'Yeah, we're ready to go.'"

Glick threw two thumbs up in the air and wore a big smile on his face and he wasn't alone. Several other vendors were glad to reopen.

With its doors wide open and signs welcoming customers, Shaka Easter strolled into the market to pick up lunch. She said some people may be hesitant, but she believes in second chances.

"As long as they keep their areas clean and I don't see anything wrong with my food, I'll be fine," she said.

Building back trust may be a tough task. Market board member Bret Keisling argued the implementation of tough health requirements for vendors should ease people's minds.

"If something isn't kept clean enough or safe enough that I'd hesitate having my family eat, then we won't let it open to the public," he said. "Nobody will get to eat there."

Vendors vouch they will police themselves and plant a new seed.

Mayor Linda Thompson announced Wednesday the market will receive $100,000 in Accountability Block Grant money.

"These funds will be used to improve and repair all the infrastructure of the market," she said.

Thompson said new ventilation and handicap accessible doors will be among the renovations.

The Midtown landmark is not just a favorite food spot, Easter claims the market builds a sense of community.

"It's a mingling atmosphere. You see people all the time that you see throughout the neighborhood. It's a meet-and-greet at the same time," she said.
