HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -
After a bout with roaches and mice, vendors at Harrisburg's Broad Street Market are now fighting customer fears.
Many say they've had slow business since the market reopened.
Friday should have been a busy day since it was a gorgeous late summer afternoon, as well as a pay day for state workers, but vendors said they saw only a slow stream of window shoppers.
With plastic bag in hand, loyal market shopper Theresa Roberts said she's not afraid.
"I love their subs," Roberts laughed.
Leon Glick with Two Brothers BBQ said business at his stand has dropped 40 percent since the market reopened.
"It's definitely been off a good bit," he said.
Glick and others understand that when you have been shut down because of health violations, specifically roaches and mice, it can hurt customer trust; something he and the other 40 vendors are working hard to get back.
Broad Street Market board member Bret Keisling plans to throw a customer appreciation day in two weeks. He said the market must send a big "thank you" to loyal customers. Deals and discounts to vendors are expected to be a part of the festivities.
Market directors said they implemented strict health standards higher than what the city requires under current health codes. One vendor explained the market acquired updated contracts with exterminators and cleaning crews who circulate often.
Glick said the new improved market has a different vibe; one that prides itself on fresh food and customer quality.
"It's looking great, there's a big difference," Glick said. "We just want to welcome ya'll back. Come on back, we need ya."
The market has passed every health inspection since it reopened.
