HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -
"Let's Refresh City Island" is the goal of the City of Harrisburg and the Harrisburg Young Professionals.
They're coming together to lead a new all-volunteer initiative to clean things up on the island. It's in definite need of TLC, especially after last year's flood. Volunteers from both the east and west shores are stepping up to help.
Trees and shrubs make it difficult to see across the river. On October 21st, everyone hopes to change that. Other work that will be done includes pressure washing decks and other structures, painting the lamp posts, and fixing signs.
City Island isn't the only park that needs work. Italian Lake used to be picturesque, but now the lake is filthy and the smell is horrible. Riverfront Park is overgrown with weeds.
Mayor Linda Thompson hopes volunteers pitch in for those projects, too. She said the city just doesn't have the money.
Once again, "Refresh City Island" day is October 21. If you would like to volunteer, email Harrisburg Young Professionals at info@hyp.org or call (717) 695-2598.
