Cumberland County dedicates land for police officers memorial

CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) -

Cumberland County Commissioners on Wednesday dedicated a plot of land to be used as a memorial for fallen law enforcement officers.

The memorial will be at the intersection of Claremont Road and Public Safety Drive in Carlisle.

The foundation behind the project announced Wednesday that it has received some big contributions for the project, including a $5,000 check from the Willis Cole Foundation.

"It's a beautiful place," said Cole's uncle, Jack Cole, of the land dedicated to the memorial. "It gives family the opportunity to come, sit down at peace and lament, and pray for the loved ones they've lost."

"My department chaplain actually came into my office about a year ago and said 'why don't we have a memorial in Cumberland County,'" recalled Richard Hammon, superintendent of police in Silver Spring Township and president of the Cumberland County Law Enforcement Memorial Fund. "I thought 'that's a good idea.'"

The Willis Cole Foundation was created by Cole's family after he was killed in the line of duty while trying to stop the robbery of a New Cumberland coin shop.
